3 people are dead and 2 others injured in a shooting after a drag racing incident took over a Chicago intersection. Police say the race was between two black men in the city’s south side suburbs.
The two men were traveling at night on I-90 north when the shooting happened. One man was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black jeans. The other wore a black hooded sweatshirt and black jeans. Both had guns.
Chicago police say the men appeared to be casing a home at which they believed the people inside were hiding.
A witness tells WBBM Newsradio’s Jim Newton that she and her son saw the two men approach two people who “were just driving by and they were coming towards the passenger’s car.” She says the car “went around the corner and they’re yelling you’re a punk and shooting.”
The witness says she and her son got in the passenger’s car after the shot rang out.
Another witness says he saw the men who shot the two people in their SUV.
Police said they got the license plate number and then arrested one of the men, later identified as 30-year-old Eric Alexander. Police say that during the investigation, they found a large caliber handgun with one spent casing and two live rounds. Police also found three live rounds in his car.
More than a dozen officers were at the scene, along with a police helicopter. The suspect was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. Police said he and the other man were suspected to be involved in other shootings in the area.
Officers and investigators were canvassing the neighborhood to find out what may have led the two men to drive through a residential neighborhood after the shooting.
More to come.
