The Maryland Career Development Association (MCDA) has awarded Stevenson University the 2013 MCDA Organizational Career Planning Award. The award, presented April 19 at the MCDA’s annual conference, recognizes an institution that has developed an excellent program for career development within the organization.

“We are very proud of this recognition of Stevenson’s career planning efforts,” said Anne Scholl-Fiedler, Vice President of Career Services. “Specifically, Stevenson was nominated for our Career ArchitectureSM process, a distinctive part of the educational experience here. The process helps our students to identify their personal core values and align them with their selection of a major and career goals.”

Stevenson is nationally known for providing career-focused programs based on an approach that emphasizes theory, practice, and mentoring. Through their course of study, students develop knowledge coupled with practical application and mastery in their major areas. Stevenson’s Career Architecture process complements this approach by helping students to build personal, practical, and intellectual competencies and leadership skills that put them on career paths after graduation. Students are engaged in Career Architecture from the beginning at Stevenson through the first-year seminar’s LEGO™ Challenge and each subsequent year through personal assessment and other reflective work to develop their personal direction, professional know-how, and discipline expertise to carry with them into their post-college careers.

Stevenson University is the third-largest independent undergraduate university in Maryland with more than 4,200 students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, and adult accelerated degrees at locations in Stevenson and Owings Mills. Stevenson has been recognized as one of America’s “Up-and-Comers”—one of only 49 colleges and universities nationwide given this designation—in the 2013 U.S. News & World Report college rankings.

The Maryland Career Development Association is a forum where career professionals network and share resources to ensure the quality and effectiveness of career services to the standards of the National Career Development Association. MCDA is a division of the Maryland Association for Counseling and Development which in turn is a branch of the American Counseling Association.

Stevenson University has received approval this April for two new Bachelor of Science degree programs in its School of the Sciences: Biochemistry and Environmental Science. The programs will launch with the fall 2013 semester.

“These programs are designed to address the critical national need for a more robust STEM workforce by providing the theoretical and experiential grounding in the sciences while simultaneously promoting the integrative types of thinking that are essential to tackling the global challenges of the 21st century,” said Susan Thompson Gorman, Ph.D., Dean of Stevenson University’s School of the Sciences.

The Biochemistry program integrates and applies chemical and biological principles in exploring and understanding the chemistry of living organisms. The new program will ground students in the chemical, physical, and biological principles that characterize living systems, and will promote an interdisciplinary mindset that prepares them to embrace the interdependent nature of these areas of study. In addition, students will develop technical skills applicable to today’s rapidly changing research, clinical, and technical fields such as medicine, the life sciences, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural and veterinary science.

The Environmental Science program will also take a multidisciplinary and applied approach, engaging students in studying the life, physical, and mathematical sciences while at the same time integrating the constructs of human systems such as business, government, and community as they relate to the environment. An emphasis on experiential and lifelong learning will prepare graduates to address the integral and interdependent relationship between humankind and the environment.

“The nature of both degrees is interdisciplinary and grows naturally out of the strengths of our established science programs in biology, chemistry, and applied mathematics as well as Stevenson’s historical emphasis on combining academic study with career preparation,” Gorman added.

Stevenson University, known for its distinctive career focus, is the third-largest independent undergraduate university in Maryland with more than 4,200 students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, and adult accelerated degrees at locations in Stevenson and Owings Mills. Stevenson has been recognized as one of America’s “Up-and-Comers”—one of only 49 colleges and universities nationwide given this designation—in the 2013 U.S. News & World Report college rankings.

This year’s show, called “Raw Concept,” will showcase original men’s, women’s, and children’s fashion designs created by the students of Stevenson’s fashion Design program. One segment of the show will feature sustainable and eco-friendly fashions from Stevenson’s “We Are What We Wear” fashion exhibition that recently traveled to New York’s Garment District for Fashion Week 2013.

“Our students have been working with our faculty as well as our Fashion Merchandising program to create an inspiring show—from the fashions to the modeling and music,” DiMarco said. “This is not only an academic capstone for their year but a presentation of some truly innovative fashions.”

Stevenson University welcomes the public to “Portals,” the 2013 exhibition of works designed and installed by seniors in Stevenson’s Visual Communication Design program. The opening reception for “Portals” will be held Thursday, April 18, 6-8 p.m. the Gallery on the University’s Greenspring campus. All are invited.

The Gallery is located in the Dawson Academic Center on Stevenson’s Greenspring campus, 1525 Greenspring Valley Road, Stevenson, MD 21153.

The installation will highlight the work of 11 Visual Communication Design majors and include collages, drawings, and digital works. The students spent their spring semester assembling their works, created both individually and collaboratively to explore how dioramas–viewed through a range of portals such as doorways, keyholes, and windows–evoke emotions, memories, and experiences that fuel our creative minds.

“The senior exhibition is a culminating and wonderful opportunity for our students to demonstrate their creative problem-solving and technical capabilities,” Amanda Hostalka, Professor of Art and Chair of Stevenson’s Visual Communication Design program. “They reflect on what they’ve accomplished in the past four years and determine how best to communicate their collective story through design. It is always original and surprising.”

“The most rewarding aspect of the exhibition is the design students realizing their exhibition ideas,” added Lori Rubeling, Professor of Art.

“Portals” will run through May 24. Stevenson’s Gallery is open to the public Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, 1-4 p.m.

Stevenson University’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences brings the Comparative Drama Conference to Baltimore for a second year. This international, interdisciplinary event is dedicated to all aspects of theater and drams scholarship, including textual and performance analysis. This year’s conference will be held April 4-6, 2013, at the Pier 5 Hotel on Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Keynote speaker will be award-winning dramatist Edward Albee.

Each year, the conference attracts more than 150 leading scholars from around the world for a weekend dedicated to academic collaboration in the fields of English, theatre, and the Classics. For a complete program schedule and registration information, visit http://comparativedramaconference.stevenson.edu.

Since the conference’s inception in 1977, the University of Florida, Ohio State University, California State University-Northridge, and Loyola Marymount University have each hosted the event. Stevenson University is hosting the conference in Baltimore through 2016. Scholars in the fields of Classics, Theatre, and English from a variety of international universities organize the conference annually. The conference also compiles and publishes Text & Presentation, which showcases outstanding papers presented at the conference each year.

Playwright Edward Albee will speak on Saturday, April 6 to conclude the three-day conference. Winner of three Pulitzer Prizes and four Tony Awards, including a Tony for Lifetime Achievement, Albee has been hailed by The New Yorker as “America’s greatest living playwright” and is known as innovator whose challenging plays have radically influenced the contemporary stage.
